Apparel Development lll: Tailoring

During my Spring 2019 semester, I was enrolled in the Apparel Development lll class that had a focus on tailoring and sportswear. Throughout the semester I was expected to learn various patterning techniques and develop multiple tailored garments. Some of the projects include developing Jean patterns, Trousers and Slack patterns and toiles, and a tailored half jacket toile. For the second half of the semester we were required to develop two of our own tailored looks that could have been derived from one of our CFDA collections. I took my inspiration from my Delicate Botany CFDA collection.

For my Delicate Botany A/W 2019/2020 collection, I looked at nature in a new way by looking at floral radiology of the plants done by Steven N. Meyers, an inspiration. These photos use layering to create alien yet familiar images. I took this inspiration and applied it to my work by using sheer fabrics and layering techniques to create the same haunting, powerful beauty of Meyers’ work. I paired this fabric manipulation with silhouettes rooted in mid-century simplicity and flair. I utilize block printing, embroidery, and 3d manipulation in the collection order elevate the classical styles to new heights. I also realize the importance of creating voluminous looks that radiate on the runway while not making them feel heavy or costume. I am able to find a balance between the theatrical and practical with my choice of fabrics like silks, wool suiting, and cotton which create a balance and exoskeleton effect in my clothing.
